U.S. Commissioner of Internal Revenue but he is having to buck opposition from
a number of candidates from other states. Senator Reynolds is reported to have
swallowed whatever opposition he may have entertained for Mr. Shuping who
managed Mr. Bailey’s campaign in 1930 and who actively opposed Senator
Reynolds’ nomination last year. Should Mr. Shuping fail to get the job he is now
afterm it is possible some other lucrative federal job will be his. And if it becomes
necessary to reward him with a job in this state, it is not without reason that he
may be named Federal Attorney of the middle district of the state.

Greensboro man unopposed for National Committeeman. C.L. Shuping elected
unanimously elected as National Committeman of North Carolina succeeding former
Governor O. Max Gardner. Shuping was the only candidate nominated for post. His
name was offered by J.C. Bower of Lexington and seconded by Odus M. Mull of Shelby.
Shuping was at his hotel during the nomination but was immediately sent to address the
committee meeting which was held in the hall of the House of Representatives at the
state capitol. Ehringhaus spoke and then Shuping spoke. Shuping expressed himself as
deeply appreciative of the honor bestowed upon him. He said he dedicated himself to
democracy in 1892 and through the years except for one occasion had served as a
private in the ranks. He urged party solidarity and unity of purpose as the thought to be
uppermost in the mind of every Democrat of the state.
